Yellow-rumped Warblers (Setophaga coronata) Sipping Sap from Sapsucker Wells

چکیده

The Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) is one of the most ecologically generalized warblers. It feeds primarily on invertebrates, but often switches to fruit during winter, utilizing a wide array foraging maneuvers. also uses variety substrates. Reports these warblers taking sap from sapsucker wells are rare. Here we report 3 instances sapsucking Warblers Arkansas. All three observations were immediately preceded by extreme cold weather with snow or ice precipitation. We hypothesize that opportunistic holes may be another strategy employed species meet its nutritional requirements harsh winters, when insects scarce.

Digestive response to restricted feeding in migratory yellow-rumped warblers.

Smaller guts and slow initial mass gains at stopover sites have led to the idea that digestive physiology limits refueling rates in migrating birds. We tested the digestive-limitation hypothesis in yellow-rumped warblers using food restriction to simulate infrequent feeding during migration, which may cause a reduction in alimentary tract mass. Restricted birds had small intestine, pancreas, an...

Speciation and rapid phenotypic differentiation in the yellow-rumped warbler Dendroica coronata complex.

The relative importance of the Pleistocene glacial cycles in driving avian speciation remains controversial, partly because species limits in many groups remain poorly understood, and because current taxonomic designations are often based on phenotypic characteristics of uncertain phylogenetic significance. We use mtDNA sequence data to examine patterns of genetic variation, sequence divergence...

Carry-over effects of winter habitat vary with age and sex in yellow warblers Setophaga petechia

We use stable isotope data to investigate the role of winter habitat use in altering the breeding phenology of yellow warblers Setophaga petechia . We fi rst confi rm that δ 13 C and δ 15 N isotopic signatures vary with winter habitat use in this species . We then examine the relationship between winter habitat use, breeding phenology and productivity within four age-sexclasses, since life hist...

Age-dependent costs of cowbird parasitism in Yellow Warblers (Setophaga petechia)

Brood parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater (Boddaert, 1783)) often reduces the reproductive success of their hosts. We examined whether the ability of females to avoid or mitigate the costs of brood parasitism improved with age in a population of YellowWarblers (Setophaga petechia (L., 1766)) breeding near Revelstoke, British Columbia, between 2004 and 2011. Cowbirds parasitized ...
